Swim

The mild mediterranean climate of the Maresme facilitates average sea water temperatures that allow a long open water swim season. Depending on your level of tolerance, you can swim in the sea along the Maresme Coast almost all year round.

We usually swim in the sea from early May to late November, when the sea water temperature climbs above 17ºC. From June to October you will find temperatures above 20ºC - peaking in August at around 26ºC.

“Wetsuit mandatory” conditions (aka water temperature below 16ºC) are typically given from December until April.

Having said that, we see open water swimmers all through the winter months - when temperatures can drop down to 13ºC - and some of them seem to be made of steel as they don´t wear a wetsuit!

Water too cold? Sea a bit too rough? Want to go through a lap swim routine? Most towns along the coast have public sports facilities which would usually include a 25m lap pool, accessible upon payment of a one-off fee of around 7€ per person (2021).

Bike

Across the Maresme region you will find plenty of options to ride - be it on- or off-road.

The old national highway N-II runs right next to the beaches (traffic has been reduced by building a new toll way further inland) and is a great option for tempo rides with a sea view. While the N-II is definitely not an Autobahn, you will share it with some cars. However, from Fall 2021 the tolls will be removed from the main highway and it is expected that this will further reduce traffic volumes. Also, this is one of the main routes of choice for cyclists drivers are used to sharing the road with groups of cyclists.

If you prefer calmer roads and don’t mind a nice climb, there are multiple secondary roads connect the villages of the coast with the villages in, and on the other side of, the hill range. You will not run out of options when it comes to winding roads with different degrees of climbs.

When it comes to off road rides on a MTB, the Serralada has literally hundreds of different trails of varying difficulty.

Run

The local municipalities have been making great efforts over the recent years to create walking paths that connect the towns and beaches with each other. Now you can basically run from Montgat to Blanes on pedestrian walkways or paths without loosing your first-row view of the sea. So, whatever the distance you need to cover - you don’t need to run around in circles and you can enjoy great views at the same time.

Needless to say that the same paths and trails that run across the Serralada are also great for (trail) running.
